Movie Matchmaker
A WordPress site that matches you with your next movie based on your mood.
Movie Matchmaker helps people find their next watch without endless scrolling. Visitors can see what real movie lovers are watching, or take the Instant Match quiz for a recommendation based on their mood.
I designed and built it for my Harvard course in WordPress Programming. View the live site ↗

The idea
Less scrolling, more watching
Streaming apps give you endless options and no real direction. Movie Matchmaker narrows it down two ways: recommendations from a community of real viewers, and a quick quiz that matches a movie to how you’re feeling right now.
Key features
What users can do
Instant Match
A mood-based quiz built in PHP that matches users with a movie in a few clicks.
Accounts and profiles
Users can sign up, log in, and save their movie matches and submissions to their own profile.
Community
A section that automatically displays what other users have submitted, each tied to their profile.
How I built it
Custom WordPress, under the hood
- Child theme so every customization is separate from the parent theme and safe from updates.
- Custom page templates in PHP that display different types of content automatically, so new pages don’t have to be built by hand.
- A custom database table using WordPress’s $wpdb tools to store user submissions.
- Theme template files to control how each content type is displayed, plus unique page layouts and a custom 404 page.
- Fully responsive across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
What I learned
Design and code, together
Building the back end myself changed how I design. Knowing how content is stored and pulled onto a page helps me design layouts that are easier to build and easier to grow.
